I am always proud to let people know that I work at Barter Theatre. In my opinion there is no finer group of human beings and theater professionals anywhere. And there are some nights when that is especially true. Tonight in Appleton was one of those times.
In Holley Housewright's words "tonight was magical". The show was strong from beginning to end, scene after scene and the final scene between George and Lennie was truly heart-rending. I've seen and heard that scene countless times since the spring run at Barter and during the tour, but tonight it reached a new depth. Just standing in the wings listening brought tears to my eyes. And the audience's response during curtain call was phenomenal. Add the great group of 1000 high school students who came to see this morning's show and you can see why we're all so glad to be back in performance after the time off.
Appleton is a lovely town, everyone here has been so nice and caring and frankly it's been fun just to get acquainted with folks. The Fox Cities Performing Arts Center is a beautiful venue and the staff here is top-notch. And to top it off with a show like tonight's show is something that will make our visit to Appleton a truly memorable experience.
